English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.

An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

Sherwood Ridge Lead Learner - English

Throughout 2019, the English Leader Learner will coordinate English Professional Learning for all teaching staff. This will take place through whole school and small group professional learning sessions, team teaching, lesson modelling, colleague observations and resource provision. The main focus in English for 2019 will be writing with the introduction of a new writing program called Seven Steps of Writing. A phonological awareness program has been implemented across K-2 which has been complimented by the purchase of new readers and resources to support the program. A grammar and punctuation scope and sequence has also been developed. All staff have participated in professional learning around this and have begun incorporating this into lesson plans. The 2018 focus areas of reading, comprehension and spelling will continue to be used school wide with new staff to SRPS receiving training around these programs.
